While there were various gunsmiths and gun enthusiasts in Cherry Valley, CA and throughout the U.S., they were missing an outlet to come together, share ideas, stories and most importantly, have some fun together! So AGI created The Gun Club of America (GCA). It stands upon four pillars: education, fun, savings and fellowship.

AGI American Gunsmithing Institute In Cherry Valley, CA Has Over Two Decades Of Experience

Two decades ago, American Gunsmithing Institute (AGI) Founder and President Gene Kelly saw an increased demand for gunsmiths in the firearms industry in Cherry Valley, CA and realized  that there was a growing need to train new gunsmiths on a faster and more efficient basis.

Gun Club Of America,  LogoKelly made it a goal to preserve the art of gunsmithing for future generations and to provide a way for gun enthusiasts in Cherry Valley, CA to pursue their hobbies from the comfort of their own homes through AGI’s course load. 

With over 330 million firearms in this country, at any given time 10 to 20 percent of those are in some need of cleaning, repair or customizing. After WWII, a large crop of new gunsmiths appeared, but now they are retiring or passing away and demand for new,Gene Kelley, Founder AGI young blood in the gunsmith world in Cherry Valley, CA is growing. 

Gunsmithing Programs Offered Across the Country

Prior to AGI’s founding, gunsmithing programs were only offered in Cherry Valley, CA at a couple of campus based schools and most people could not afford to attend them so the number of gunsmiths continued to decline.

This gave Kelly the idea to found AGI. Using Master Gunsmith Bob Dunlap’s teaching methodology, combined with the video techniques developed by AGI, Kelly was able to create a unique teaching method that allowed students to learn at home in Cherry Valley, CA at their own pace. And thus, AGI was born. Since its inception in 1993, AGI has gone on to use this same method to teach people welding, machining, locksmithing and other trade skills.

Cherry Valley, CA, Cherry Valley California is located southeast of San Bernardino between Redlands, Beaumont and Banning, along Highway 79 near Lake Perris and the San Jacinto Reservoir. Cherry Valley is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino, California metro area.

Cherry Valley is a people-oriented, rural-residential and agricultural community nestled by beautiful mountains. It has two historic landmarks: the Cherry Valley Grange located at 10478 Banning Avenue and the Edward-Dean Museum of Decorative Arts located at 9401 Oak Glen Road. The community of 17 square miles is home to approximately 7,000 residents also has an annual Cherry Valley Festival that draws visitors from near and far. That festival is the Cherry Jubilee Crown of the Cherry Valley Grower’s Association, an integral piece of California history which is held each June.

History of the Cherry Valley Festival

The Cherry Valley Festival had its origin in 1914. in the year 1930, the first Cherry Valley Festival Queen was crowned. The U-Pick Cherry System, where people pick their own cherries, started in 1941 during WWII when fuel shortages made fruit transportation uneconomical. After the war, the U-Pick System of “U-Pick Your Own Cherries” continued as a tradition. A non-profit organization called the Cherry Festival Association was formed and legally chartered in 1952. It incepted an annual program of a carnival, concession stands and an art and horse show.

In 1983, the Cherry Valley Chamber of Commerce united its efforts with the Banning Chamber of Commerce to select and support a queen and her court with the newly combined title of “Miss Banning / Cherry Valley.” Each year the “Cherry Queen” reigns during the Cherry Festival.

Mission History

In 1824, Franciscan friars from the San Gabriel Mission near Los Angeles established a mission ranch here and called it San Gorgonio Rancheria. Banning’s first permanent landmark, an adobe house, was built in 1854 on land now known as the Gilman Ranch.

Cherry Valley, CA, The 2010 United States Census reported that Cherry Valley had a population of 6,362. The population density was 786.7 people per square mile (303.8/km²). The racial makeup of Cherry Valley was 5,450 (85.7%) White (73.5% Non-Hispanic White), 63 (1.0%) African American, 102 (1.6%) Native American, 87 (1.4%) Asian, 4 (0.1%) Pacific Islander, 451 (7.1%) from other races, and 205 (3.2%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1,347 persons (21.2%).

The Census reported that 6,203 people (97.5% of the population) lived in households, 98 (1.5%) lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and 61 (1.0%) were institutionalized.

There were 2,612 households, out of which 540 (20.7%) had children under the age of 18 living in them, 1,375 (52.6%) were opposite-sex married couples living together, 236 (9.0%) had a female householder with no husband present, 98 (3.8%) had a male householder with no wife present. There were 115 (4.4%) unmarried opposite-sex partnerships, and 16 (0.6%) same-sex married couples or partnerships. 769 households (29.4%) were made up of individuals and 500 (19.1%) had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37. There were 1,709 families (65.4% of all households); the average family size was 2.89.

The population was spread out with 1,057 people (16.6%) under the age of 18, 448 people (7.0%) aged 18 to 24, 1,039 people (16.3%) aged 25 to 44, 1,967 people (30.9%) aged 45 to 64, and 1,851 people (29.1%) who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 51.9 years. For every 100 females there were 90.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.0 males.

There were 2,874 housing units at an average density of 355.4 per square mile (137.2/km²), of which 2,098 (80.3%) were owner-occupied, and 514 (19.7%) were occupied by renters. The homeowner vacancy rate was 4.4%; the rental vacancy rate was 5.5%. Of the population 4,853 people (76.3%) lived in owner-occupied housing units and 1,350 people (21.2%) lived in rental housing units.

According to the 2010 United States Census, Cherry Valley had a median household income of $54,929, with 7.2% of the population living below the federal poverty line
