Two decades ago, American Gunsmithing Institute (AGI) Founder and President Gene Kelly saw an increased demand for gunsmiths in the firearms industry in Muir Beach, CA and realized  that there was a growing need to train new gunsmiths on a faster and more efficient basis.

Gun Club Of America, LogoKelly made it a goal to preserve the art of gunsmithing for future generations and to provide a way for gun enthusiasts in Muir Beach, CA to pursue their hobbies from the comfort of their own homes through AGI’s course load.

With over 330 million firearms in this country, at any given time 10 to 20 percent of those are in some need of cleaning, repair or customizing. After WWII, a large crop of new gunsmiths appeared, but now they are retiring or passing away and demand for new,Gene Kelley, Founder AGI young blood in the gunsmith world in Muir Beach, CA is growing.

Gunsmithing Programs Offered Across the Country

Prior to AGI’s founding, gunsmithing programs were only offered in Muir Beach, CA at a couple of campus based schools and most people could not afford to attend them so the number of gunsmiths continued to decline.

This gave Kelly the idea to found AGI. Using Master Gunsmith Bob Dunlap’s teaching methodology, combined with the video techniques developed by AGI, Kelly was able to create a unique teaching method that allowed students to learn at home in Muir Beach, CA at their own pace. And thus, AGI was born. Since its inception in 1993, AGI has gone on to use this same method to teach people welding, machining, locksmithing and other trade skills.

Muir Beach, CA, Muir Beach, California, Heading north on Highway 101, from the Golden Gate Bridge, the small southern Marin "town" of Muir Beach is just 6 miles from the Highway 1 exit. It's comprised of around 150 homes of mainly full-time occupants, who are lucky enough to enjoy the 2 beaches, the surrounding Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Mt. Tamalpais, nearby Muir Woods National Monument, Green Gulch Farm/Zen Center, Slide Ranch and, of course the "old" English Pub, The Pelican Inn.

This beautiful area is full of wildlife: Monarch butterflies in the pine trees, salmon in Redwood Creek, frogs in the pasture, fox, birds, deer, coyote…! Horses and dogs are usually allowed on the beaches and some trails (but be sure to check with the rangers for updates or changes), the waves are great for boogie boarders and kayakers, the fishing is plentiful, and the star gazing is endless! The Community Center has classes, craft fairs, and can be rented for events, the Fire Department is volunteer and has a fun rock-n-roll fundraiser BBQ each Memorial Day Sunday, the children attend public school in Mill Valley, the zip code is Sausalito's, there's no cable T.V. (but there's Bookmobile and Muir Beach has its own wireless internet) and the pizza guy won't drive the curvy road!

The history is full of Miwok and Portuguese tales, and the current locals are so very pleased to be able to live in such a healthy piece of paradise! It is my pleasure to bring this site to the people of Muir Beach and to those who feel strongly about and connected to its beauty! Please enjoy your visit, comment in the Guest Book or email us, use the services of the locals and come back often!

Muir Beach, CA , Muir Beach is a census designated place (CDP), unincorporated community, and beach that is located 16.5 miles (26.6 km) northwest of San Francisco in western Marin County, California, United States. It is named for John Muir. The population was 310 at the 2010 census. The community itself flanks the northwest side of the beach.

Located about 2 miles (3 km) from the entrance to Muir Woods National Monument, the beach is about 1000 feet (305 m) long and 200 feet (61 m) wide, with coarse sand and several large boulders. Redwood Creek empties into the beach. There is a parking lot at the beach, which is accessible via a footbridge.

The beach was formerly called Big Lagoon after a freshwater lagoon that was located where the parking lot is now. Damage from 20th century dairy farms interfered with the flow of the creek and the lagoon.

Muir Beach is unincorporated, receiving general government services from Marin County, including law enforcement, land-use planning, library, public health, and code enforcement. A special district, the Muir Beach Community Services District, provides local services, including fire protection, water, road maintenance, and recreation. The District has a board of directors, with five members elected to four-year terms. The District includes all of the Muir Beach CDP, plus Green Gulch Farm.
