AGI American Gunsmithing Institute In Rocklin, CA Has Over Two Decades Of Experience
Two decades ago, American Gunsmithing Institute (AGI) Founder and President Gene Kelly saw an increased demand for gunsmiths in the firearms industry in Rocklin, CA and realized that there was a growing need to train new gunsmiths on a faster and more efficient basis.
Kelly made it a goal to preserve the art of gunsmithing for future generations and to provide a way for gun enthusiasts in Rocklin, CA to pursue their hobbies from the comfort of their own homes through AGI’s course load.
With over 330 million firearms in this country, at any given time 10 to 20 percent of those are in some need of cleaning, repair or customizing. After WWII, a large crop of new gunsmiths appeared, but now they are retiring or passing away and demand for new, young blood in the gunsmith world in Rocklin, CA is growing.
Gunsmithing Programs Offered Across the Country
Prior to AGI’s founding, gunsmithing programs were only offered in Rocklin, CA at a couple of campus based schools and most people could not afford to attend them so the number of gunsmiths continued to decline.
This gave Kelly the idea to found AGI. Using Master Gunsmith Bob Dunlap’s teaching methodology, combined with the video techniques developed by AGI, Kelly was able to create a unique teaching method that allowed students to learn at home in Rocklin, CA at their own pace. And thus, AGI was born. Since its inception in 1993, AGI has gone on to use this same method to teach people welding, machining, locksmithing and other trade skills.

Rocklin, CA, Rocklin’s Whitney Oaks Golf Club is am 18-hole public course that prides itself on providing world-class service and features a driving range, clubhouse with bar and grill, and a well-stocked Pro Shop plus facilities large enough to accommodate weddings and banquets.
The City of Rocklin has a long history, but much of the growth has been within the last 30 years. Rocklin was first recognized as a destination along the transcontinental railroad in 1864, about the same time granite mining began. Rocklin was incorporated in 1893 during the heyday of railroad and granite mining activity. By 1910, 22 quarries operated in Rocklin and, in 1912, nearly 2,000 train carloads of granite were sent out of town to become part of the state capitol building and buildings in San Francisco.
North of Rocklin’s core was Spring Valley Ranch, founded in 1855 by the Whitney family. Whitney’s ranch included sheep and a wide variety of agricultural products. Over the years, 25 miles of crushed stone roads, 12 granite bridges, stables, barns, and housing for 200 ranch hands and their families were all constructed on this sprawling 30,000 acres, now considered the first developed property in Rocklin.
Whitney’s ranch was eventually subdivided and sold off to various development interests as the expansion of suburban communities from Sacramento to the northeast led to the growth of the housing market in Rocklin during the late 1950s and early 1960s. This resulted in the development of the Sunset Whitney neighborhood, centered around a beautiful golf course.
Beginning in the 1980s, Rocklin realized the benefits of a lower cost of living and land that drew high technology firms and other industries to the region. This resulted in an expansion of commercial and residential development, including Stanford Ranch, the 3,000 acre master planned community that had also been part of Spring Valley Ranch. A steady period of growth continued in Rocklin with additional master plan areas including Whitney Oaks (1,000 acres) and Whitney Ranch (1,300 acres).
As Rocklin has evolved, the City has saved many of the original granite bridges used to cross creeks on the Spring Valley Ranch and has designed parks to include these bridges.
Rocklin is now nearing the end of its growth phase. With few remaining large, undeveloped parcels and no opportunities for annexation, City leaders are shifting their focus from one of growth to long?term sustainability. Rocklin must ensure that the City’s high quality of life can be sustained in the years to come. This shift in focus requires new thinking, new ways of doing things but also provides for new opportunities.
Part of the City’s long?term model for sustainability is to look back on where it all began: the City’s core. Downtown and Historic Rocklin are ripe with opportunities for redevelopment. Quarries still dot the landscape, providing a unique asset for new community, park and recreational uses.
In addition, California will impose new rules on ammunition sales. Ammo buyers will be required to pay a fee and undergo a background check by the state Department of Justice every time bullets are sold, thus recording all ammunition sales and purchaser information with the state.
Rocklin, CA, Rocklin's history is closely tied to the transcontinental railroad. In 1862, the Pacific Railroad Act granted the Central Pacific Railroad land near Secret Ravine. In 1864, the Central Pacific Railroad completed an extension of its track southwest from Newcastle to Secret Ravine. It named the area Rocklin after its granite quarry, and used the site as a refueling and water stop. The Central Pacific built a roundhouse in 1867.
The transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869, significantly increasing railroad traffic through the town. According to the 1870 census, Rocklin had grown to 542 residents, and the majority of Irish immigrants had foregone mining and were working for the railroad.
In 1906 the Central Pacific moved its facility from Rocklin to Roseville, where more land was available for expansion. The site in Roseville has remained in continuous use since. As of August 2014, it is the largest rail facility near the US West Coast.
In 1869 a group of laid-off Chinese railroad workers moved to Secret Ravine to mine and raise vegetables which they sold locally. They were driven out during the anti-Chinese pogrom of September 1876 but the area is still known as China Gardens.
The Rocklin post office opened in 1868. Finnish immigrants settled in Rocklin starting in the 1870s, and Spanish settlers arriving by way of Hawaii settled in Rocklin during the early 20th Century. The town incorporated in 1893.
During the two decades that Britain was making lawful firearms ownership increasingly difficult, more than 25 states in the U.S. passed laws allowing responsible citizens to carry concealed handguns. There are now 40 states where qualified citizens can obtain a handgun permit.
