King City, CA, King City is a friendly and close-knit community of 13,580 people, ideally located in the picturesque southern Salinas Valley of the California Central Coast in Monterey County. The City lies 155 miles south of San Francisco and 277 miles north of Los Angeles, providing convenient access to all areas of California. King City serves as a gateway and access point for nearby Pinnacles National Park, Monterey County wine region, a thriving agricultural area, U.S. Army Garrison Fort Hunter Liggett, and an area rich in history made famous by the writings of John Steinbeck. The community features beautiful mountain views, tree-lined streets and a quaint historical downtown.
While King City enjoys a charming small town feel, it also offers many amenities. The City was incorporated in 1911 as “City of King” and is a charter city. The City of King derived its name from pioneer Charles H. King, who was born in New York State on May 3, 1884. King purchased 13,000 acres of the Spanish land grant and founded the King Ranch. His crops succeeded beyond expectations in the area, causing the railroads to take note. In July 1886, the Southern Pacific completed rail lines to what became known as “King’s Station.”

King City, CA, King City was originally known as King's City for the founder, Charles King. In 1884 Charles King acquired 13,000 acres (53 km2) of the Mexican land grant Rancho San Lorenzo, and began growing 6,000 acres (24 km2) of wheat. The town began as a train stop in 1886 for the Southern Pacific Railroad to service the farms and ranches in the south Salinas Valley and to transport the goods to San Francisco and Los Angeles.
It was originally called "Hog Town" since swine were one of the major agricultural products of the area in the 1880s. The King City post office first opened in 1887. King City incorporated under the name "City of King" in 1911.
J. Ernst Steinbeck, father of the novelist John Steinbeck, claimed to have been the first permanent resident of King City. Steinbeck was certainly among the first settlers. He was the first agent for the S.P. Milling Company, which built an early warehouse and flour mill alongside the railroad tracks running through town. The mill was built by R. M. Shackelford, an early California settler and businessman who owned sheep pasturage next to that of Charles King.
King City elevation is 330 feet (100 m) above sea level, between Greenfield to the northwest and San Lucas to the southeast, both also on U.S. Route 101. The amount of land area in King City is 3.8 square miles (9.8 km2). The Salinas River flows on the west side of the city; due to its sandy bed, portions of the river sometimes flow underground, especially during the summer months
