Edwardsville, IL, The Edwardsville Police Department is proud to announce that we are accepting applications for the Fall Edwardsville Citizen's Police Academy, and like to extend an invitation to those interested in learning about constitutional law, rights of citizens, and the duties of law-enforcement officers. The purpose of this academy is to strengthen the positive relationship between the members of the Edwardsville Police Department, and the citizens they serve.
This academy gives participants a chance to learn certain aspects of law enforcement through a “hands on” learning environment.
Academy sessions will include tours, demonstrations, and practical exercises that will allow participants to experience life from a police officer’s point of view. The academy is a 10 week course to be held on Thursday nights from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Southwestern Illinois came under control of the American colonies following capture of British posts by Gen. George Rogers Clark’s forces during the Revolutionary War. By the early 1800s there were still relatively few settlers along the western border of United States’ Indiana Territory.
Edwardsville was first settled in 1805 when Thomas Kirkpatrick built a one-room log cabin on the ridge above Cahokia Creek. Originally from North Carolina, Kirkpatrick obtained 100-acres along Cahokia Creek from Pierre Lejoy. His cabin was approximately 300-yards from North Main Street at the north end of O Street.
The oldest known building in Edwardsville today is a log cabin concealed under modern siding at 1712 North Main Street. This site is northwest of the Kirkpatrick cabin site.
Edwardsville, IL, As of the census of 2005, there were 24,047 people, 7,975 households, and 5,199 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,549.2 people per square mile (598.2/km²). There were 8,331 housing units at an average density of 600.6 per square mile (231.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 87.70% White, 8.66% African American, 1.69% Asian, 0.28% Native American, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 1.35% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.00% of the population.
There were 10,000 households, out of which 32.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.4% were married couples living together, 9.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.8% were non-families. 25.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44, and the average family size was 2.99.
The population was spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 16.0% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,921, and the median income for a family was $65,555. Males had a median income of $47,045 versus $29,280 for females. The per capita income for the city was $26,510. About 5.0% of families and 8.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.3% of those under age 18 and 6.0% of those age 65 or over.
Edwardsville is a part of Southern Illinois, the Metro East region, and Greater St. Louis. It is part of the Edwardsville School District, which also includes the villages of Glen Carbon, Hamel, and Moro, as well as thetownships areas around them.
Edwardsville was originally incorporated in 1818, making it the third oldest city in Illinois. It marked the first movement of European-American settlers up onto the Illinois tallgrass prairie and out of the American Bottom below the river bluffs. The first European-American settler was Thomas Kirkpatrick, who came in 1805, laid out a community, and served as the Justice of the Peace. He named the community after his friend Ninian Edwards, then territorial governor of Illinois.
